Kimmo / Kronos / Kosminen / Kuusisto
-
Accordion virtuoso Kimmo Pohjonen turns 50 this August and will be celebrating his half-century at Huvila with an appropriately starry guest line up. The birthday concert is an opportunity to hear Pohjonen re-visit his earlier collaborations with a number of big names, among them the legendary US-based Kronos Quartet.
The evening will consist of a series of performances by a number of acts from a Pohjonen solo appearance to guest performances by violinist Pekka Kuusisto and sampling guru Samuli Kosminen. A decade ago, Pohjonen, Kosminen and the Kronos Quartet’s widely lauded Uniko premiered at Huvila. Their collaboration now continues with brand new material.

Huvila Festival Tent
Tokoinranta (Hakaniemi)
Eläintarhantie 8Important! Please dress appropriately. The tent is not fully wind proof and may be draughty.
The Huvila Festival Tent is the Helsinki Festival’s dedicated hub and a unique cross between a concert hall and a traditional festival marquee. Designed by architect Roy Mänttäri, the tent has been erected every year since 1995 at a variety of locations across the capital. The Huvila programme, encompassing everything from intimate concerts to riotous club nights, is a valuable addition to the city’s music scene. Huvila is particularly known for its strong world music offering and for providing an early platform to lesser-known artists. Past Huvila acts include Radiohead, Cesaria Evora, Marc Ribot, Laurie Anderson & Lou Reed, Wilco, Hugh Masekela and Yoko Ono & Thurston Moore.
As the name suggests, Huvila is a tent and the weather can sometimes lend its own special charm to the proceedings. Sounds from outside the tent can sometimes be heard during performances. Don’t forget to bring a warm layer, as the nights in August can be chilly. We also ask that you arrive promptly as the seating is unallocated. The Huvila season coincides with the end of the summer season and to make the most of it, there is usually dancing on most nights!
The tent comprises an atmospheric restaurant, the perfect place for enjoying the August nights post-concert. Catering is provided by Helsinki’s highly-acclaimed Juuri restaurant.
Events at the Huvila Festival Tent are for adults aged 18 and over. Younger guests can be admitted provided they are accompanied by a guardian. The age restriction does not apply to the daytime concert on 31 August.
The performances start at 19:00 and finish no later than 22:00.
